Mountain Lions in Connecticut?

One of our most commented-upon stories in the past few years is "Seeing Ghosts" by Brigitte Ruthman, which explores the possibility of mountain lions (or "cougars" or "catamounts" or "pumas") having returned to the state. Since the story was published on connecticutmag.com in 2005, there have been numerous eyewitness accounts posted from people who believe that they have seen a mountain lion here, primarily in the less-populated and more-forested northeastern and northwestern corners of the state.

Officials at the Department of Environmental Protection maintain that the majority of sightings are either bobcats or coyotes, and cite the lack of physical evidence (no footprints, no dead carcases, etc.). The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has created a site dedicated to the Easter Cougar, and is trying to verify the existence of this elusive creature.

I personally have done a lot of hiking around the state and never have come across any of these creatures, but that doesn't mean they're not out there. Anyone have any stories to share?

UPDATE: I posted this last week, and lo and behold in a hometown paper, the Shelton Weekly, there's a report of a third appearance of a large "cat-like" animal in the White Hills section of town. The creature sighted was a "golden animal" "the size of a baby deer" and was reported in a tree at one point.

SIGHTING: NOVEMBER 16, 2007-GUILFORD, CONNECTICUT. DRIVING ALONG A GRAVEL DRIVEWAY IN A WOODED AREA AT DUSK WITH HEADLIGHTS ON, I SAW THE LARGE CAT'S HEAD AND REFLECTING EYES STARING AT ME. I STOPPED THE CAR WITH THE LIGHTS TRAINED ON THE CAT. THE HEAD TURNED SIDE TO SIDE; CLEARLY A CAT'S HEAD. THE ANIMAL STOOD UP, TURNED SIDEWAYS, AND STRETCHED LIKE A HOUSECAT DOES. I COULD SEE ITS LONG THICK TAIL (CYLINDRICAL, NOT BUSHY). THE CAT LOOKED TO BE THE SIZE OF A MIDDLE-SIZED DOG AND WAS COLORED LIGHT BROWN. IT WALKED OFF INTO THE DARKNESS. I NOTIFIED THE GUILFORD POLICE DEPARTMENT ABOUT THIS SIGHTING.

On December 31st 2007 Northford Ct.I was driving down rt.17 (Middletown ave.) just before the center of town. I slowed down because I thought that the dog on the side of the road would jump in front of my car. When I came to a stop I could not move It was a cat the size of my 100lb choc, lab. I had time to really look at it. It was blond with a long tail and when it took off it moved so fast I could not believe it. It jumped off the side of the road like it was a glider.

My neighbor was watching my German Shepard for for me last week. She saw one in my drive way. It was very early in the morning. It had a cat in its mouth..assuming it was its own kit as my husband and I saw what we thought was a very small mountain lion a few days before. Bigger than a cat..different face and blond with a big tail.

Suffield, CT On my way home from work a few weeks back I spotted a large golden colored cat on the side of the road near the airport. The corm fields in the back were still attracting deer. It looked like a large cat sitting down. I talked with a farmer from Suffield last summer and he said he had seen tracks and a large cat in one of his fields. I also so the email of the cat on the deck in Simsbury. It is certainly possible that they are around. Very secretive and lots of human encroachment.

On Sunday, 3/2/08, my fiance and I were walking around Miller's pond in Middletown/Durham, Ct area. There were paw prints in a straight line, no deviation, going across the iced over pond. Very distinct and 3 - 3 1/2 " in diameter. No claws noted. According to my track book from the Audobon Society, this could of been a mountain lion...also known as a cougar. I went back today (3/5)to take a pic and of course, everything's melted. Paw prints were definitely too big for a coyote. I will definitely bring my camera on each hike from now on.

In response to the sighting of the Mountain Lion in Suffield Ct. I saw a Mountain Lion in that same place you saw it. I was traveling on Rt 75 in Suffield right near the Meadow Rock Farms a few years back. I had a mountain lion cross the road right in front of me. He came out of the corn field and went over to the farm where all the sheep are. I was so shocked. I couldnt believe was I was seeing.

My son and his girlfriend were driving home late one night in Nov.
2006 and had a mountain cross our street in front of them. We live near the state forest in Somers Ct.
They came inside and we brought up pictures of bobcats and mountain lions on the internet and there was no doubt as to what they had seen. That same winter, a hunter saw one from his tree stand in the
same forest. He is a Monson Ma. police officer and I believe him.

I also saw the e-mail about the mountain lion on the deck of the Suffield home. I'm only 15 years old, but i hang out on Green Road in Ellington, CT every weekend. One night near the fire pit my friends were sitting in their truck being circled by a mountain lion. But my friend's truck which i was in was a very loud truck so we scared it away. We've seen it about 4 times since. They do have a 600 mile living range, so who knows when he'll be back. We think its a male because it was about 7 feet long its back was about 3 feet high, and the footprints we tracked were really large, so we looked it up online and it seemed like a male. It's really scary stuff though we need to be aware of what is around us.

A week ago we heard loud noises that sounded like two animals fighting out side our home in Burlington. Two nights ago we heard the same growls at 2:00 a.m. My son looked out his window and saw what he first thought was a large bobcat. When it turned to move away he saw that it was easily over 100lbs, and had a long tail that curved up at the end as it dragged behind the animal. We are convinced that it is a mountain lion, and heard it outside again last night. There are many wild turkeys in the area, and wonder if that is what he is after.

I have yet to see any wild cats on my frequent Blue Trail hikes, but this past week I have been doing some off-trail exploring and have come across large amount feces that resembles a dog's. Normally, I wouldn't think twice about it, figuring it is cyote or perhaps wild dogs, but it is the places I come across it, and the amounts of it that has me wondering. In one particular spot on a very steep rock face, between where a large boulder had split, there was at least 10 piles of it, black in color, all in the same spot. This made me think of a cat rather than dog, seeing how dogs aren't known to go in the same place, but I would assume cats do. Also, this particular spot seemed to be quite difficult for any dog to get to even once, as opposed to repeatedly. Does anyone know the habits of wild cats in this manner? I know its a strange thing to talk about but I would assume if it is a cat species, then this must be where its living, right?

I had (i think it was) a mountain lion run out in front of my car in Beacon Falls this morning. I looked up pictures when I got to work and it wasn't a bobcat. It ran out of someones yard across the street and into the woods. It was golden color with long tail.

Bristol,CT On June 6th, 9:15am, glancing from my kitchen window, I saw a large tan cat about the size of a labrador, approx. 75 lbs., with a large tail, coming out of the woods, crossing my back lawn, then disappearing into the wooded area of the next property. As this is in a residential area, I notified the Bristol Animal Control. They believed it could be a mountain lion passing through.

Appx 6:00pm tonight I was traveling north bound on
Terryville Rd (72) between Rte 6 and Rte 4 in CT,
close to where the road crosses Bristol Reservoir, and
saw what I believe was a mountain lion crossing the
road. The animal was approximately 50 yards in the
distance. Having some very large dogs and knowing
their weights, I would guesstimate the animal in the
100 lb range - lean body. Color was golden brown.

Yesterday evening, June 12th at about 5:45pm on catamount rd in fairfield (of all roads to be on) i was riding my bike at about 20mph, came around a corner and was 50 feet & closing rapidly on what i can only describe as a mountain lion. His head was maybe 18-24 inches off the ground, and he was probably 303-36 inches long with a 12-inch stubby tail. Beautiful tan coat, short hair, moved like a full-sized cat, looked realy healthy. So cool wish i had a camera. By the time i had closed the distance he was off into the woods & kept going.

In the fall of 2005, I was on my way to Millerton, N.Y. about 7:00 in the A.M. As I rounded a curver just south of Warren, CT a large tan cat ran down off the lift side of the embankment and jumped over the fence posts and down into the lower woods towards a small brook. I couuld clearly see it had a long tan tail and was NOT a bob cat! This was a mountain lion for sure. The hair was short, tan and it was a cat.

I live in Glastonbury CT on the edge of the meshomasic state forest. Early (5:30am) 7/2/08 I looked out my bathroom window and saw a mountain lion (90% sure) stalking up the rocky outcrop in my back yard. The outcrop is 75 yards from the house. The tail was long and round unlike a coyote or fox. The tip was black. I would estimate this animal at 80 to 100lbs. I also have a deer that comes to my house almost every day to eat deer feed (I know it's a bad idea but it saves my plants). This deer (currently has two fawns) has a deep gash in it's side and gouged fur like it has been attacked. I also have a picture of a footprint from last winter when mountain biking that I originally thought was a bear. The print is approx. 7" x 7". I have seen Bears, fishers, many coyotes and foxes.

I live in Southbury, CT. Last February I was driving home in late afternoon along Kettletown Road, just across the road from the Southbury dump. A VERY, VERY large, unusually long-legged cat crossed the road. I was too far away to see the big cat really close up, but noted that this kitty was absolutely too large to be a bob cat. And her legs looked too long. She just sauntered across the road, completely without fear. I raced up to the spot where she had stepped off the road in to the woods and she just looked at me when I stopped the car. Bobcats are much more fearful than this cat was and seem to always scurry away from people ASAP. (I actually had one disappear once in the split second it took to blink.) But this cat was langourous and decidely unafraid. I didn't get a good look at the cat's rear end and have no memory of what the tail looked like.
I recently heard that there were mountain lion sightings in Southbury, in the vicinity of the dump. And my neighbor reports that she's seen one, and that there was in fact a mountain lion that came up on her porch one night.

Hello,
I am renting a house close to Washington Depot, CT. Last week around 4 p.m. I saw a large cat (small deer size) walking leisurely along our gravel driveway (about 5 yards from the window). The colour was dark beige-brown with a massive head. I reported the sighting the police who transfered me to several other departments which logged the call but no action followed due to the lack of physical evidence.

On Sunday August 3rd, My wife and our young baby were hiking on trails behind Richter Golf Course in Danbury CT and we both saw a large cat. It was browninsh and had a long tail. Was relatively small however, probably 40lbs. Did not look like a bobcat and much more like a "Cougar". In our neighborhood cats have been disapperaing all summer. We lost two- and many nieghbors have also reported this. We al assumed coyote- but now we are not so sure.

In the summer of 1991 or 1992, I saw what I thought (and still think) was a mountian lion in Connecticut. It was about 10:00 to 11:00 at night, when I was under the route 84 overpass, driving on route 34. I saw it in my headlights on the side of the road, and slowed down. It walked past me in the grass on the side of the road. I spun the car around, and looked for it again.. but it was gone. This was a very large animal. It had a long tail, and a tan coat.

This is a fairly residential area not sure if this is common.

I grew up in the outskirts of Winsted, CT, on route 44, in between Winsted and Norfolk.

I was walking home from town one day, and as I usually did, I walked in the woods instead of on the road since I loved hiking. I came into a fielded area and saw some strage animal feces(I later looked online to discover it was of a mountain lion). I continued my way and was working my way down a path leading out of the field when I heard twigs and sticks snap behind me in a walking pattern. I was roughly 150 feet from Route 44, so I sprinted towards the road.

When I reached the road, I looked back and nothing was there. But then I looked down the road and there was a very large golden cat with a long tail. Slinking along the tree line down the road away from me.

That had to be about 6 years ago.

It was brown with a white but and its paws where huge. It had a very long tail and jumped about 10 ft up over a fence on top of a hill. We had about a 2 min look at this thing and I would call it nothing other then a mountain lion or cougar of some sorts. I was at a loss of words and now its driving me crazy after i called the dep and they blew me off.

Very eerie, sounds like the mix of a cat and a woman sceaming. It screams than stops and starts again and only at night. There are many deer and coyote in these woods.

I JUST SAW MY 1ST MOUNTAIN LION, WHEN YOU SEE ONE ITS UNMISTAKABLE, ITS FACE IS THAT OF A BIG CAT,ROUND AND MENACING, BUT WHEN YOU SEE ITS LONG TAIL AS IT RETREATS THERE IS NO DOUBT! ...we do have mountain lions in ct. like i said i was bowhunting yesterday, i was on the ground using a estrous bleat, the cat came in 26 yards to my right, i wheeled around with my binoculars, it caught my sudden movement, it locked eyes with me for about 5 seconds,,the cats face is unmistakable,,it turned ends and loped off carring with it a long sweeping tail with a black tip on the end of its tail,,id say the lion was about 18-22 inches at the shoulder, maybe 6 feet long head to end of tail,,and perhaps 60-80 pounds! I know what i saw,,,i will call dep today and tell them,,,but they prob.will just deny my reports- I feel the state must have introduced them here,,why else would they resist reports when people call in about seeing mountain lions. A neighbor of mine here in Bethel Connecticut told me that she has seen what appears to be a bobcat or at least resembles a large wild cat. This was earlier this summer. The animal did not appear to be afraid. She was walking with a friend and the friend's dog. The cat appeared to be looking at the dog very intently. They slowly walked back away from the direction of the cat. Two nights ago, I heard a what sounded like a wild cat (very different from a cat fight where the cats are house cats) in our yard. That concerns me a great deal. Anyone who can add to this subject matter for clarification on the species of wild cats in Connecticut would be greatly appreciated.

Someone near me that also saw it immediately asked, "Is that a bobcat?" But I told them I was almost sure it was a mountain lion because it was larger, golden, and with a large, long tail. I will always be convinced it was a mountain lion.

There is no doubt in my mind I had a mountain lion on my ridge at the Canton and Simsbury town line a few years ago. It was more afraid of me than I was of it. When it turned and walk away it had a long sweeping tail with a dark tip. Mountain lions are long, lean, sleek animals with long sweeping tails. The bobcat is named for its tail, which appears to be cut or "bobbed", their face is whiskered, and they have tufted ears. I've seen bobcats, coyotes and foxes up close. The difference is obvious.

It's been a while now, but this summer a friend and myself were up behind Mad River Damn in Winsted. We'd been wandering around the woods for a couple of hours when we came around the corner of a fairly steep drop and came face to face with a large, smooth coated cat. It had to have been standing about a yard high. We were stunned. Me and my compatriot stared at the cat, the cat stared back, and then it took off. Needless to say, we did not follow.

I'm aware of the animals we have living in the area. Foxes, coyotes, bobcats, fishers and the like. This was not one of them. I don't care much what the DEP has to say about it, there are cougars in Connecticut.

Everybody wants to believe that there are Mt.Lions in Connecticut. Anyone who believes that simply doesn't have a good understanding of the animal. Mt. Lions require huge tracts of land (the kind of tracts that still exist out west). If there were Mt. Lions here, one of the thousands of hunters that sit in the woods every morning would have shot one by now. That is if they hadn't already filled there bag limit with Sasquatch.

Perhaps our conventional or "good" understanding of large predators such as mountain lions should be reevaluated.

Gray wolves need lots of prey and large, open spaces too, but one was shot in 2008 in Massachusetts. http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2008/03/05/after_160_years_a_wild_gray_wolf_turns_up_in_mass/

It's always good to question sightings and circumstantial evidence, but take a look at this site and the evidence collected within: http://www.cougarnet.org/northeast.html .

There are 4 front pad prints, no nail marks, and about 4" in diameter. I will show them to the DEP office in Burlington, so who knows what they'll say. I'll post again when I have more info.

I have also seen a mountain lion. About 15 years ago while taking a slow Sunday drive through Winchester, CT, a very large mountain lion walked right out in front of my car and just stood there staring at us for at least 15 seconds before walking away with the attitude that I was rude enough to have driven in it's path, it had absolutley NO FEAR of us, my boyfriend at the time went to get out of the car when I stopped him, it was an amazing site, to those so called experts on the subject that claim mountain lions do not exist in CT... I know what I saw, it was at least 140 pounds, no more than 10 feet away from me, with plenty of time to stare in awe, this occured in the middle of the day, bright sunlight and nothing to block my view, there is no mistake, it WAS a mountain lion, hook me up to a lie detector, I will prove them wrong

This is from Ashford Ct (northeast ct near rt 89
Last summer (2008) a deer was hit in front of my house and we weren't sure what to do so we just left it for a couple of days. As you can imagine it began decomposing and emitting a strong odor that attracted many wild animals. One night my mom and i returned home from shopping and as we approached the front of our house we saw a huge tanish colored animal. By the time the lights of our car shone where the animal was, i could only see the back end (back legs, behind, and tail), but my mom claims to have seen the face before it walked in the direcion of our house. We automatically thought it was something along the lines of a mountain lion, but many websites claimed that none live in ct so we remained curious and thought nothing of it. It was obviously not a dog and a few days later we visited Cabela's. We walked into a room that had animals that we find regularly in our yard (deer, fisher cats, bears, foxes) and we saw the animal from that night and low and behold it was a mountain lion. We figured out that we had to call the down to dispose of the dead deer and we haven't seen a mt lion since.

After discussing this issue today, and reading this website, i belive that there may be something on the West Simsbury/Canton/Granby town lines. I doubt that there is much going on east or route 10, although it wouldn't be impossible.

The CT Mountain Lion (most likely the Eastern Puma) is on the endangered species list. From enature.com: "Currently the species [eastern mountian lion] is fully protected where rare, and classified as a game animal where abundant."
It is obviously easier for the DEP to just brush this off untill solid proof comes in. Im thinking of taking a video camera, and going to look for droppings, or possibly set it up somewhere where it would be likely to pass through for a night or something. Anyone on the town lines mentioned above that thinks they can help me with a good starting location would be appreciated!

ps. the porch picture from a """simsbury""" resident was most likely hoaxed.

My wife and I looked out the second story of our home using a spot light. We saw a cougar. Not a bobcat, a cougar. Looks like it could have weighed 90-100 lbs,, It was a solid tan color on it's body and a darker tail. The tail looked like it could have been 3-5 inches in diameter. It was looking my chicken coop over. When it saw the spot light, it trotted across my back yard and into the woods. There are cougars in Connecticut.

8:30 on a rainy November (20008) morning in Plainville, CT in the industrial park off of Northwest Drive a feline carrying a rabbit in its mouth walked out of the brush to cross over the road in front of me. It was not a bob-cat because I have seen those many times. I described it (before I found out that it was possibly a mountain lion) as a cat the size of a big dog mixed with some type of wild cat. It walked right in front of my truck looked over at me and continued into the brush. Now that I have seen the photos I am positive it was a mountain lion. It looks just like the photo that is in this publication light brown with a thick tail that could not belong to any type of domestic cat. Nonetheless, the way it swaggered across the road looked absolutely beautiful

Sighting: April 25,2009-Brookfield,CT. At 7:25am as I was looking out my kitchen window I saw a very large cat like animal running through my yard and into the woods, where it continued to run along the ridge, being chased after by a large flock of cawing crows. It was a golden brown color and my guess is it weighed close to 100 lbs. I immediately went to the computer to find pictures that resembled the animal I had just seen. The pictures that closely resembled it was the mountain lion.

It always amazes me when I hear Mountain lions are not native to CT. Mountain lions WERE native to CT. That is until we extirpated them. If Mother Nature intended for them to be here-then they will surely roam here again.

I live in Colchester CT and spotted a mountain lion while walking on the Airline trail in April, the week after Easter. It was CLEARLY a mountain lion, not a bobcat. It was the size of a large dog, tan colored, long tail (NOT BUSHY), with a cat face. He came over a ridge on the trail and stopped along the edge of the trail and stared at us for about 2 minutes. He was definitely a mountain lion. He then walked across the trail, down the hill on the other side and ran across a field. I could not believe my eyes, it scared me to death. I wish I had taken a picture with my cell phone, but I was too freaked out during the time to think about a picture. Luckily my kids were not running ahead of us at the time of the sighting. People can continue to deny that there are mountain lions in CT but we definitely know what we saw. I know I will not return to the Airline Trail with my kids without some type of protection.

I was driving on Black Rock turnpike in Fairfield, towards the Fairfield hills side at about 1am. A large animal ran in front of our car and we had to swerve to not hit it. At first we thought it was a coyote, but coyotes are not near as big and do not move like this animal. The animal was about the size of a 100lb dog. The animal was a yellowish tan and moved quickly with long strides and was quite agile. It was also had a long tail. After getting over the shock of seeing this thing and for a split second, we sort of concluded that it may have been a mountain lion.

I saw one mid afternoon in New Milford, about a minutes drive from the town green in the Mallets Lane section of town. It was standing in the road about 300 feet from me. It darted back and forth across the road a couple times into the woods. The last time it went across the road, it looked like it had something in it's mouth. It may have been carrying one of it's kittens or perhaps a rabbit that it had just caught.

As I drove thru Burlington my way home home tonight , about 7 pm, I saw a large cat run in front of my car on route 4 just before the right turn to go toward Unionville. I didn't get a great look at it's face. It was golden in color, about the size of a large German Shepard, and had a long tail. It bound accros the road in about 3 to 4 steps and was gone into the woods. At first I wasn't sure what to think but I knew it wasn't a Bobcat, it was too big. It wasn't a dog- it moved like a cat. My guess would be a Mountain Lyon.

On June 16, 2009 at 9:10 AM, I was traveling on Lambtown Road in Ledyard. Suddenly a very large cat ran across the road a few feet in front of my car. In the two seconds the cat was in my view I noticed a tawny, short coated cat, with a very heavily muscled shoulder and a blunt head, approx 4 or more feet in length, maybe 18 to 20 inches at the shoulder and certainly over 80-100 pounds. The cat effortlessly jumped over a stone wall and immediately disappeared.
My first impression was that I had seen a mountain lion although I knew that mountain lions are not supposed to be in Connecticut. To authenticate my sighting I must say that 4yrs ago I had seen a bob cat traveling across a well known road in Ledyard. The bob cat was much smaller and had a noticeable ruff around its head. What I saw two days ago was not a bob cat.

Waaaaaaay back in 2003 on the 14th of August, the day the nights went out, A mt. lion came towards me in my woods while I was filling a bird feeder. At first I thought it was a deer. It was taking long feline strides looking down, then it diverted it's direction from E to NE. I waited to see what it was but it never came around the big bolder so I walked up the hillside. It had returned to my path, tail down between back legs and "smallish body" (as I thought of Labrador or whatever? vs an African Lion)...then it walked on a downed oak tree, leaped up a 4' ledge, over another downed tree and continued by WEST over the mountain. While it jumped it's big rather long (almost as long as it's body) tail flung up over it's back. I called DEP and they decided since I was just 60' away initially that it probable was a released pet!!!

I live in New Fairfield. Of late I heard of sightings in Patterson, NY, not far from where I live.
There cannot be just one in the state, but they are here. I am not afraid to walk my woods but carry a big walking stick.

Very early in the morning just as night was turning to day....probably around 5 a.m.....in the first week of June in 2008 I was standing on the porch of my home on Kent Hollow Road just at the edge of a heavily forested area when I saw a large cat which was clearly a mountain lion (much too big to be a bobcat--I've seen many bobcat in my day) walk purposefully directly across the far end of my field into the forest.

My property is heavily populated by rabbit and of course deer and I suspect the mountain lion had been feasting on rabbit in one of the rabbit den on my property.

I am very familiar with mountain lion and that is definitely what I saw--in Kent Connecticut.

I heard this second hand from neighbor in Middlebury, CT. 20 year old girl sees deer in yard suddenly large cat appears and pounces on deer, she screams as cat drags deer into woods behind house. Her father gets there just in time to see deer being pulled into woods. They contact police. Short time later when authorities investigate they find half of a deer carcass in woods. This supposedly happened at 3:00 pm on 7/23/09. Didn't hear anything about tracks. I thought they said the cat had a ear tag or collar. Please post any information anyone may have heard about this incident.

MY HUSBAND AND I WERE ON ARE WAY TO COLCHESTER CT. AND WE CAME ACROSS A MOUNTAIN LION ON ROUTE 16 AROUND 2:30PM. IT WAS A FEMALE AS SHE DIDN'T HAVE THE LONGATED NOSE. I SAY SHE WAS ABOUT 90LBS, QUITE BREATH TAKING, BUT IT WAS AMAZING HOW SHE JUST STOPPED AND STARED AT US, DIDN'T RUN AWAY JUST TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROADWAY TO GO IN THE WOODS. ONE HAD TO RUB THERE EYES TO REALIZE WHAT THEY SAW. WE WERE ABOUT 10FT AWAY FROM IT. I JUST WONDER IF ANYONE HAS REPORTED THESE SIGHTINGS TO THE POLICE? I AM SURE THERE IS MORE THAN ONE.

This afternoon while driving home in Brookfield, CT, up ahead there was an animal on the road and I had to look twice before my son recognized it as a bobcat. It stood in the road for a moment and then took off over a fence. I have never seen one in my area before and was quite surprised.

On Thursday my husband was driving on route 8 when he saw a large cat like animal with a black tip on the tail which was climbing up the rocks on route 8 right before the parkway ends. He was so amazed that he rushed inside and started to look on the internet to see what type of animal it was because he said it was much longer and taller than a bobcat and after seeing pictures he quickly identified it as one. Our neighbor in Mass. confirmed that he has spotted a few watching his cow's and horses and was told by the police that he can not shoot them. Be aware of your surroundings because we do have mountain lions in north granby.

On August 4th at 8:45 pm, my boyfriend and I were driving in New Hartford. as we pulled up to a stopsign on a small four way intersection between Bruning Rd, Stub Hollow Rd, and Maple Hollow Rd, we noticed a large, tan, muscular animal illuminated in a car's headlights to the right of us on Maple Hollow Rd. I've lived in Burlington all my life and I've seen countless deer, foxes, and even the occasional bobcat and bear in my backyard. In the brief time my boyfriend and I saw the assumed Mountain Lion in the headlights, we determined it was larger then foxes and bobcats (which are not much bigger then a house cat), too muscular and bulky to be a deer, and not bulky, furry, or dark enough to be a bear. Coming to the same conclusion, we immediately pulled over and began driving around the area we had seen it. There was a small farm on the right of the Mountain Lion sighting, but the cows were too bulky and dark to be what we saw. This area is very near route 8, and judging off of what the person who posted before me said, there is a definate possibility that my eyes did not decieve me.

August 21, 2009 at about 10:00 p.m. My sister and I were driving up Shortwoods Road in New Fairfield when we spotted a strange animal in the middle of the road. We interupted his skunk dinner when we had to come to a complete stop to avoid hitting it. It ran so quickly into the woods that we couldn't tell what it was. Neither of us had ever seen anything quite like it before. It was bigger than a house cat, very thin, and had a long tail.

August 22, 2009 again driving up Shortwoods Road, we were watching for this animal in the same area. It resembled a bobcat - but had a long tail and was a very light tan or tawny color. We really didn't expect to see it again - but there it was sitting in the middle of Shortwoods Road! It stared at the car as we approached and did not run off as fast as the night before so we got a much better look at it. It was definitely feline and definitely not anything we had seen before.

While researching cat-like animals in CT - we came across this site along with others that led us to believe that the animal we saw was a mountain lion/cougar/puma. We believe it was very young since it was not large like cougars or panthers we've seen at the zoo - but closer to the size of a bobcat. This cat did NOT have a bobbed tail, however. It's tail was long and the body built just like the cougars we found on the internet.

What really scares us is "Where's Mommy?"

On Tuesday, September 1 I looked out our back door and saw a quite large cat crossing our property. It was moving slowly coming from a group of pine trees, crossing the yard and disappearing into the woods again. At first I thought it was a bob cat but it was much larger and longer and lacked the pointed ears. We live in Oakville CT on property that boarders farm lands and woods.

About 2 weeks ago as I was on my way home from work on a road out in Oxford, CT...not to far from the airport area a deer shot out the woods running for dear life and right onits tail was what looked to be a mountain lion, this cat was huge and jumped from one side of the street where the woods ended clear over the road into the woods on the other side chasing the deer. Now i don't think I would give much attention to all these sighting stories had I not witnessed an event like this myself. Instead of the DEP dismissing peoples calls and sightings as they, they should get out there and do some investigating themselves to make people more aware of what we have living amongst here in Connecticut, its not like these cats weren't native to the New England area sometime ago. We have deer boom in the stae, wild turkeys are on the rise, so this is very possible nowadays, it wasn't to long ago they told us there were no coyotes in CT now look.

This past May my husband and I saw what we believe was a mountain lion in Northwestern CT. It was the size of a very large labrador retriever, had a very long, rope-like tail and leapt up and moved like a cat. We also found scat. We shared this info. with the cougar network and with CT fish & wildlife. With pictures and visual analysis of the scat we were told the scat was 'dog' or 'coyote or fox'. Well, we had the scat analyzed for DNA at a lab and guess what!? The scat was FELINE. With the scat and sighting there is a strong possibility that there are mountain lions out there. FYI I got no response when I passed on the lab results to the cougar network or CT fish & wild life.

We live in a very populated area of Stafford Springs. My 'little' girls 12 & 6 were walking our golden retriever & spotted a Mt. Lion. They came home so excited! I told them CT, didn't have any large cats. They insisted after research & intense questioning. I believe my girls. Note: I home school & we have not been talked about large cats in many months. We do not have T.V. None of their friends have talked about or seen Mt. Lions. So they did not contrive seeing this. Tonight while looking online with my husband we played a Mt. Lion scream & I realized we heard one a few months back & I dismissed it as another animal. We will be getting a gun & will shoot to kill if the animal comes nearby again. We have too many young children to risk an animal so brave as to come this close to our house.

I'd say they're here.
In Brookfield, CT, driving home on a rural road called Ironworks at 10:20 pm today, I came around a corner and saw eyes glinting from something large in the road. At first I thought it was a deer, but no- it unwound and jumped over the guide rail, its long tail lashing for balance behind it. Given that's exactly the same spot I've seen deer, foxes and raccoons, and nothing looked quite like this guy, I'd say we've got big cats.

I live in Granby and have neighbors who have see a mountain lion in their yard. I have personally seen a mountain lion twice, once on Hungary Rd. in Granby, and once in Simsbury. Both sightings were at dusk - the problem with getting physical evidence is that many aren't exactly looking to see a lion when it happens, and also, the animals move incredibly fast. However, I am certain at least one lives in the Northern CT area.

January 24, 2009 Ellington CT,
At around 10:00 PM as I came up the driveway, I saw a mountain lion at the base of the hill in my back yard. It stood still for a moment staring at the headlights, its eyes shining like glowing coal, distinctive color, strong legs and cat like face. It was much bigger than a domestic cat and definitely not a coyote.

I looked up pictures on Google and I am pretty sure it was a mountain lion.

Last night around midnight, my son saw, for the second time, a large cat about 20 feet from our porch, that he claims is a cougar. My granddaughter also saw a similar animal at midnight run across our back yard. I'm concerned that this animal is coming so close to our house. We live on 45 acres in Watertown, CT and our property has many homes on the perimeter. These people have a lot of small children and until I see the animal myself, I won't call the authorities, who always seem to negate or downplay the sightings. If I do see this cat, I will call the police and then the newspapers and the television stations. Maybe then, someone will do something about this.

Today I saw a photo of a cougar stalking a white tailed dear in the western united states. It reminded me of an incident when I was with my father, so I googled to see if there had ever ben more sightings, and found your site - we owned a house in Roxbury, Ct. which is part of Litchfield county. The house had been vacant for 2-years with a caretaker visiting once a week. It was built on farmland and there were still apple producing trees about 50 yards down the hill from our porch. My dad and I went up to the house to get it prepared to rent or sell - had to have been in 1988 or 89. My dad opened the sliding glass door, pointed down the hill to a spot under the apple tree and said " look at the" he started to say dog and just the doh and then air came out - I looked down the hill as a cougar turned to look at us. The hair on the back of my neck stood up. It stared at us completely unafraid, It turned and we saw it's profile, very long tail with black tip, Then it walked off instantly blending into it's surroundings. It was the only time I had been that close to a wild alpha predator in my life. We thought we were crazy. Must be something else - checked the library and it was a mountain lion. No doubt about it. The other wild cats weren't half its size and none of them had that tail. I wanted to report it to fish and game, but my dad didn't want them trampling all over - wish I had thought of looking for tracks. Anyway, two or three days later the local real estate agent came to look at the house, and we told him the story. He thought it was completely possible. He mentioned Panter rock nearby - it was the dutch word for panther. He also said the mountain lion was driven out with the near extinction of white tail dear. He said the deer population is thriving again. He also said we only saw it because nobody had been living in the house for 2-years. I firmly believe they are in that area and people don't see them because they are highly in tune with their surroundings - they know we are there, or coming, long before we can see them. The house was on Botsford hill road in Roxbury Ct.

Regards,
MRJ

with all these sightings, even if 10% are valid and not a mistake.........I find it hard to beleive that a body doesn't show up before the end of the year.

I just found this site and read them all...wow! On July 19, 2009 while driving on Currituck Rd. in Newtown near the Pond Brook stream(close to Rt. 25 & So. Brookfield)a muscular tawny colored cat crossed the road in front of our car...it looked like a house cat but wait that was too big! The house cat body image and elongated sprint stayed in my mind...it had a regular cat's tail...not a Bob Cat's short tail! One color. Well, like most of the others I googled BOBCAT. I copied at least 10 different photos trying to find an example of a Bobcat with a long tail- no luck. I read articles about CT mountain lion sightings but no DEP recognition.I remember trying to convince myself that a Bobcat might have the appearance of a solid color while running. In the late 90's I saw a Bobcat in Redding, where we used to live, and it was small and furrier. Back then I said, "There is a Bobcat with those cute ears!"
My Newtown sighting: the cat I saw was not as big as our Malumute. It was running so I can not be sure the pounds. Bigger than any house cat. I looked at the dates in this blog and I see several Brookfield and New Fairfield sightings happened about the same time. Maybe the one I saw was a female Mt Lion. I guess most people like me spend an hour or two that day trying to figure it out and then just tell the story when the subject of wild animals comes up in conversation. One last thought: I do not live in a rural area but the gigantic gas pipeline goes through where I saw the cat. If you look at Rt 25 and Currituck/Obtuse Rd from aerial the pipeline is like a "greenway" connecting many of the towns mentioned.
When this happened last summer I remember reading about a cow in upstate CT that was mauled by an animal ON ITS BACK. Was it New Milford? A Mt Lion was suspected. And what about the Shelton sighting...I thought there was a photo? Could someone please post a photo. Could someone find the link to the article I once read about the person who goes around speaking about the elusive Eastern Mountain Lion to library groups, etc. Thanks, RT

I was in my back yard with my dog around 3:30, when something out of the corner of my eye caught my attention. I saw what I could only describe as a mt.lion, it had the cat like walk or glide. The animal was about five ft in length with very solid legs, and a small cat head with small ears that stood up. It was a gray brown color, approximately 70lb with a 2ft to 21/2ft tail. It was about 110ft to 120ft away from me and my dog, it was on the edge of my property and Gawron rd heading toward Gawron. I quickly picked up my dog and ran toward the house shouting for my wife to grab the camera. Once inside my wife scrambled for the camera, and she managed to get a picture from our back deck........ It definably got the heart rate up!!

Hey, we saw a big cat just a few weeks after arriving in connecticut from the UK last August (2009). It was in Ridgebury near Danbury. We were driving down the road in the evening and caught it in our lights. The three of us just sat in shock seeing it stop in front of the car and look straight at us. My first thought was mountain lion. It was podgy not skinny like a bobcat. More like a very large baby lion. It also didnt have the pointy features of a bobcat. It casually turned and wandered off into the trees.

Around 1984 or so, there was a picture published in the Williamantic Chronicle of a mountain lion. The picture was taken by a woman walking her dog in Goodwyn state park on route six near Hampton. The picture clearly showed a mountain lion perched in a tree. Note the long tail wrapped around the trunk of the tree, proving it was not a bobcat.
If someone wanted to search the Willimantic Chronicle's archives, I am sure you could find this photo.

We live in Plainfield CT, and pulling into our drive way last night at 1:00am we saw two huge diamond shaped eyes blinking at us only a few feet off the grass line into the woods. The head was about 4 feet off the ground and the shape and closeness of the eyes were that of a really big cat. The car lights didn't seem to scare the cat. so we grabbed our kids and ran into the house leaving all our luggage in the car to get in the morning. I called the police to let them know, hopefully this cat goes away. I have two small children and am scared to go out side with them now.

It was at approximately 9:50 pm Saturday 6/12/2010 on Inchcliffe Drive in Gales Ferry. I was sitting doing some work on my computer when I heard what sounded like a loud hissing noise coming from outside. I have 3 indoor/outdoor cats and sometimes find they get in spats with other area cats. I got up, went onto the back patio and saw something large and tan in the shadows of my motion light. I went and grabbed the flashlight I keep on the ledge inside the door and shined it back into the yard. Standing about 20 feet from me was a large giant animal. I first thought it was a deer by the color but it then looked right up at me as it circled my black cat. Its fur was very short and tan. Its face was round, its muzzle are was round. It appeared to be over 90+ lbs. I have a 90 lb bernese mountain dog and it clearly was taller then her. It had a long thin tail. I shouted loud, as I thought it was going for my cat. It turned and bound into the woods. We could hear it running through the woods for a few minutes after this point, and it was definatly not small.

There was a lot of cat fur around on the ground. It looks as if there was some sort of struggle. We found the cat, and she was scared but ok.

We had another cat that was attacked a few weeks ago, who had not come home for about a week. We are not sure what got her. She finally came back with 3 large puncture wounds and most of her fur on her back side gone. She will not even go outside now.

We know there are fishercats in the area but this clearly was not one. It was too large and too short of hair to be a bobcat. Wish I snapped a picture but I was too busy trying to get it to let the cat go.

This was quite alarming. The animals are not going outside anymore.

On Sunday, July 27, 2010 I was driving with my wife and family over the ridge of Mountain Road in West Simsbury, CT and a large mountain lion that weighed at least 125 pounds crossed the road about 50 feet in front of our car. It was very powerfully built and has large shoulder muscles. It was the size of a very large dog. I have seen many bobcats before and this cat was massive compared to a bobcat which leads me to believe it must have been a mountain lion.

My family and I were going down 184 toward Stonington (almost to the road closure) when we saw a large animal ready to cross the road. It was as big as a large dog, but lean, long bodied and light brownish gold. When it crossed we got a good look at the profile and it was most definately a cat. It had a long thick (not bushy) darker tail and dark ears. It was what I thought smaller than I imagined a cougar would be. We have been searching for pictures on line and NOTHING compares to it's features but a cougar. 8/9/10

Sue said.... At 7 am 8/9/10 I saw the same animal that was described by Rose. I was walking with my dog when I spotted a large cat near Haley Brook under the power lines that cross Lambtown Road in Groton. This could have been the same animal that Rose saw. The same power lines cross over Rt. 184 not far from where Rose's sighting occured approx 3 miles away from here.As I was walking through this area my dog's hair was raised on her back and she moved with caution. Luckily I saw the mountain lion before she did. It was about 20-30 ft away from me, walking away from me.( towards RT 184 ) I made a quick retreat, grabbed my dog and headed for home.

In November of 2004, my mother saw what she believed to be a mountain lion cross in front of her car as she was driving home at night. This was on Mt. Hope Road in Mansfield. She maintained that it was a mountain lion or some sort of large cat, and not a bobcat. She was an intelligent woman and knew the difference between the two types of cats. My father is a wildlife enthusiast, so she had seen plenty of pictures of both types of felines. Unfortunately, she is now deceased but one of the many conversations I would like to have with her again would be about that mountain lion sighting. We have not seen it since. I was motivated to write this post because WILI ran a piece on this subject this morning and it made me recall my mother's story. The biologists who were the featured guests maintained that the sightings were likely cases of mistaken identity, and it does beg the question: why can't anyone produce any evidence, such as a photograph? I don't know the answer. I only know my mother's story, and I believe her.

I live in Haddam CT. Driving home yesterday on Rte 81 in Killingworth, a cougar crossed the road in front of me. It had come out of the woods on my right, crossed the road then effortlessly jumped over a stone wall into someone's backyard. It was approximately 70-80 lbs., had a round head and small pointed ears, it's body was about 4 feet long and it was about 26-30 inches high at the shoulders. It was a solid golden color and it's tail was about 3 feet long. I would have stopped and tried to get a picture but I had traffic right behind me. I reported the sighting to DEP but they said there aren't any cougars in CT. They said if there was any there would be pictures of them and some would be found dead on the side of the road. That's funny because if you read some of the earlier posts in this forum, two different people reported seeing one dead on the road. Sounds like the DEP doesn't want to be bothered.

I have a track outside my backdoor right now in a sandy part of my driveway with four toe prints with a look of sudden stopping or starting and about four inches wide . I can't think of anything but a large cat to cause this.I also saw a large blond colored cat in my back yard late spring 2009, and a couple days later it growled at me at dusk , twice, once when I went out to my porch and seconds later when I was next to a window. This cat was carrying either a rabbit or a woodchuck in it's mouth. A friend of mines uncle has seen them on his farm in Woodstock for seven years.

I've definitely seen a cougar in Southeastern CT. I was driving on a back road, at about 10 PM, with my son, when one crossed the road in front of us and was illuminated in the headlights. When it emerged from the woods, we thought it was a dog, but as it moved across the road, in only two leaps, it was more than apparent we were viewing a cougar. Its tail was long and cylindrical, and was behind as it moved. It was impressive.

We have thousands of acres of fields and swamps around our home (unfortunately not ours), so there is ample room to move and hunt for a large cat. There is an abundance of coyotes, which tend to visit my yard most evenings, in groups of two or three.

This was not a bobcat, which is another animal we see often in this area. We have English Mastiffs, one of which nearly ran down a bobcat this past June, so I'm aware of their size in proportion to that of my dogs. This cougar I saw was of an entirely different sort. I would never allow my dogs to chase the animal I saw crossing the road.

my parents were living on old stafford road in tolland back in the winter of 1982. my mother used to like to feed the birds suet (to help them keep their body heat).
one morning she went out into the back yard to fill the suet feeder..but it was gone. the chain that had held it up in the tree was broken. she thought that maybe a big dog had gotten ahold of it. a few days later i spotted some very large cat prints out in the woods behind their house.i told my father about it and he thought that they could be bobcat prints. later on that year, in the springtime, i saw the prints again. this time they were imprinted into the semi-solid mud near the road, and i showed them to my father. he called 1 of his neighbors to come take a look at the footprints. the man's name was cole wilde. he was a game warden. cole took one look at the prints and told my father that they were cougar tracks. then he told dad to "keep quiet about it or every yahoo with a rifle will be running around the woods looking to shoot it". dad and i did tell a few people...but, only people we could trust.
and it goes to show you that the DEP game wardens have known for at least 28 years that there are some of these elusive creatures here in our state. just be aware of your surroundings when you're out in the world.

Scotland sighting: 1/16/2011

Today, around 3.16pm
i was driving on rt. 97 north, about a mile south of scotland campground, i spotted a large, grey/brown cat leaping across the road. It was about 100 feet in front of the car i was driving. It was beautiful, with black tipped ears, and in 4 springs, it was across the road.
Boy was that cat beautiful!

My husband, I and our two childen were driving down our road yesterday morning after a snow storm in Colchester, and saw what we thought was a dog. As we approached it wa apparent it was not a dog, coyote or bobcate. It looked like a cougar or mountain lion. It then jumped a 10 ft bank of snow to an open field (we live in a woodsey area with farms)

I live in Suffield and just last month, I was coming home around 11:30 in the morning and a bobcat was in my front yard. I can only assume it was sick because it saw me pull in and crossed the road to a wooded area. It came back from the wooded area, and walked down the middle of the road! A bus was coming over the bridge and that is when it darted back into the woods and down to the creek. Now my neighbor has a dead deer in his front yard, and i again have huge pawprints in my snow, only this time with little paw prints right next to it. I hope it is not back

I live on the Morris/Bethlehem town line. Admittedly, I'm not good at identifying wild animals from a distance. About two football fields away from me, in a cornfield, at about 8:30 a.m., I saw a large tan animal running like a cat (shoulders level). It was much bigger than a bobcat and much lighter in color than the black bear we had galumphing around here a few months ago. Any thoughts as to what it might have been?

while watching tv ,a show came on about big cats roaming about and it reminded me about a cat i saw 15-18 or so years back when on a landscaping job in colchester,ct.
it was lunch time and three of us drove from the jobsite up the road to a dirt road and turned in,drove down it maybe 1/4 mile or so. it was very narrow with brush nearly scraping the truck on either side.while talking and having lunch, motion caught my eye in the door mirror, driver side,i just glimpsed the head of what i thought was a black panther,,but that couldnt be right? my brain said "no way" my eyes were arguing back saying "yes way". the head area in left mirror AND in the passenger mirror the damn tail went behind the truck(it was visable in both mirrors at the same time, for just an instant.a long animal). the cat walked from right to left and i glanced to my mirror again, and saw the rear end of the cat and tail walk into the weeds and dissapeer.
i told the guys, they didnt believe me. we talked it over for maybe 5 mins or so. then we got out, grabbed some rakes and such, walked behind the truck and looked for prints, we found nothing. nobody will ever convince me i saw anything other than what im describing to you here. after all,it couldnt have been more than 15ft. behind me. (8' pu bed,cab plus maybe a space of about 3 to 4 ft behind the truck) believe me or not.

Today my wife and I were walking down the Windsor Locks bike trail from Suffield with our small dog and almost three miles down by the train tracks I noticed something moving near the water's edge. When I got a better look I saw that it was a mountain lion. I grabbed my dog and as I looked back at the mountain lion it was staring right at me, 40 yards away. The mountain lion was about 120-170 lbs and was a tan color. Luckily we were able to turn around and walk away without being attacked.

This was emailed to me, from the principle of CSH

On Sunday evening, June 5th, several faculty members on the Brunswick King Street Campus observed what they described as a Mountain Lion on the school’s property. The large cat was observed near the wooded area and walked off into the heavy brush. The cat was also observed by a crew from GEMS who, in turn, reported it to the Greenwich Police Department.

Today we met with the Greenwich Police Department and a representative of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. We are at this time, awaiting confirmation from the DEP as to the identity of this animal.

As a result of this incident, the school has decided, as has Brunswick, to take the following precautions which will take effect immediately:

The School has begun to take steps to mitigate this issue with the assistance of the Brunswick campus Business Manager, the Greenwich Police Department and the Department of Environmental Protection.

LESS THAN TWO YEARS AGO IN GUILFORD I WAS ON OLD SACHEMS HEAD ROAD AND I SAW A MOUNTAIN LION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. WHERE I SAW THE BIG CAT WAS IN FRONT OF A HOUSE WHERE I KNEW A BIGGER DOG LIVED SO AT THE TIME I WAS UNSURE WHETHER OR NOT IT WAS THAT DOG OR SOMETHING ELSE. I PUT MY HIGH BEAMS ON AND THE CAT RAN INTO THE WOODS. ABOUT 20 FEET AWAY HE STOPPED AND STARED AT MY CAR AND IT WAS CLEAR AS DAY THAT IT WAS A WILD CAT. I WENT HOME AND DID MY RESEARCH ON MOUNTIAN LIONS AND IT STATED THAT THEY WERE EXTINCT. I HAD TOLD A FEW FRIENDS AND DESCRIBED THE BEAUTIFUL CAT AS BEING MUCH BIGGER THAN A LARGE DOG, BUT MUSCULAR AND SOMEWHAT LEAN AT THE SAME TIME, A LONG TAIL, AND THE BEAUTIFUL LARGE EYES. I WAS HESITANT TO DISCUSS THIS FURTHER ONLINE AT THE TIME, BUT NOW I KNOW THAT WHAT I SAW WAS REAL.

May be concerned people of the town or village need to get together and discuss this matter before it goes out of control.

May be they can set up traps and capture mountain lions (if there are any) and send them to the zoo. May be this can be done with the help of DEP before their numbers grow too large and leave no choice but to start shooting them!

We all respect nature but we are also part of the nature. Can we blame ourselves for being protective of our children and grandchildren?

Mountain lions are in different states of USA, but Connnecticut with high vegetation makes people more vulnerable. So if we see everyone cutting down their trees and shrubs because they are afraid, how will that help the environment?

People of each locality should come together, guard and help each other in this case.

By the speaker Bill Betty at Tolland High school on last Thursday night: There are evidences that Connecticut has mountain lions.

By DEP mountain lions are extinct in Connecticut. We are not seeing any report of Milford Mountain lion necropsy yet.

What shall people do?

Here is a list of things I can think of, please add/delete:

1. Start cleaning up your yard and bus stands.
2. Take pictures. Don't worry if it was a bobcat, fox, coyote... that can be judged later.
3. Educate your kids & friends. Other schools need to host talks like Tolland High school did. Talk to the principals.
4. Police may carry tranquilizers, in case they see one during normal patrol hours, they should use it.
5. ... ...

At about 5:30 this morning I was out back of my house smoking cigarettete and all of sudden out of the corner of my eye I saw a big cat it was walking beside the adjacent condo complex it was about 20 or 25 feet away, it was walking very slow, I made a noise and he turned his head and stopped and then sat down. We were staring at each other for about a minute then he walked away very slowly and the last thing I saw was that signaturere long tail. It was about the size of a Germen Shepard, all tan except for a whitish underbelly and a black tip at the end of his tail. This was in a Residential condo complex.

Please call CT DEP 24-hour Emergency Phone Line at 860-423-3333 telling where/what you saw.

Mountain lions shall not come so close to human. DEP of CA, MO, WY are much serious about this. CT is not used to these lions. But we have to grow and DEP needs to start looking more seriously at each case.

Few days ago when there were sighting at Canton OH, they closed the park, looked for the animal using helicopter! This is our backyard! Wake up CT!

Before ending up in Greenwich and finally at Milford the lion had to travel through places in CT which explains some of the earlier sightings by all those other people of CT. They were not lying or did not see wrong either.

So from now on can CT people expect and hope for better attention by DEEP and police?

Mountain Lion Seen 8/11/11

On the morning on Thursday, August 11th 2011 a friend and I saw what we believe was absolutely a mountian lion. It trotted across leetes Island Road towards a field where deer are frequently seen. We got a great view of it as it crossed directly infront of my car- I would have probably hit it if I didn't stop the car in the middle of the road.

Has anyone seen this as well??

There has been the story that there is a 250lb mountain lion that roams mountains...Farmington to Avon to Simsbury to Canton and Granby...and around about back again. I have lived in Simsbury for 30 years and only spotted him once. I was working the 3-11:30pm shift at a local insurance company in Avon Park South. I was driving home on a bright moon night after my shift heading north toward Simsbury Route 10/202 and to the right window of my car I spotted this animal crossing an open field by Northeast Utilities station and near Avon Post office. I pulled over for a few minutes to watch it. It was definitely a very big cat I could see it because of its size crossing the field going north too. I was amazed to see an animal so big in the distance I had to pull over to observe. After a few minutes I proceeded home being aware to look around when I walked from my car to my door because I live in a wooden area at the base of the mountains and near the Farmington River. Recently I have noticed a sign on the north end of Simsbury stating if mountain lion sighting please call phone number. I know the local news is reporting no mountain lions in Connecticut but that is not true!! The mountain lion that roamed from the northwest usa to Greenwich CT & was hit by a car & killed is not the same Cat I saw in the moonlight that night because the cat I saw was very large and I spotted him in the distance prior to when the dead cat was reported on the local news. He is still here somewhere roaming around and very savvy to roam only at dead of night. I told other people my story and others told me that yes they did see him too. Never saw a bobcat either until I opened my curtains for sliding glass door and there he was staring up at me! I have had Bears in my background eating birdfood from the feeder he moved to the ground. I have seen alot of wildlife I am from Adirondack Mountain areas prior to moving to Simsbury Ct. I know a mountain lion when I see it. This is the truth and I wanted to share it w/others. Developing the mountains in Avon, Simsbury, Farmington,Canton,Burlington and Granby areas are pushing the wildlife out their natural homes into developments that are now peoples'homes. I do believe Connecticut has mountain lions well atleast one in the Farmington Valley area. Beware Hikers & Families!!

I have never personally seen a mountain lion in my area (North Stonington), but I've heard several credible eyewitness accounts from friends who are experienced outdoorsmen. Last year, I buried four dead pygmy goats for my neighbor (all had characteristic claw marks on their rumps, with accompanying paw tracks). Most recently (9 April 2012) a neighbor photographed a mountain lion on Rt 49 and has seen it several times in the area. Last year, "something" ripped a 2x2 foot hole in the thick mesh chicken wire of my henhouse. No other animal could have done this. There's no doubt that there are more of these big cats in CT than people believe.

On September 25, 2012 I walked up onto the ledge behind my home on Lambtown Road, Ledyard. I did this carrying a tree limb and making loud conversation due to the fact that one night two weeks earlier my husband witnessed a large grayish brown, short haired, long tailed cat with large paws cross Col. Ledyard Hwy west to east in front of his car between Allyn's and the horse farm. My encounter on the ledge behind my home was with a large, grayish-tan cat that stood totally still just inside a lightly-wooded area watching me unknowingly approach it. I had been looking down at my garden and then looked up and saw the animal's outline. It was about noontime and sunny out. And I saw that its head was focused in my direction. I kept talking loudly and slowly began backing away while holding the stick high.

Both my husband and I both said Look at that Puma! together at the same time! I thought maybe there might be one somewhere in the woods but certainly not in the city! It had a large thick tail that curved up at the end and high shoulders all black and could walk with ease down the trunk.

are some of the factors using which Search Engine Optimization services are taken care of.

The main aim of SEO is to get search engines positioning a certain website well in results for specific keywords.
NOW, I don't mean you should just put keyword spam in your footer. There are so many good blogs out there, and if you're one of
those writers, you definitely know how important it is that your site gets heard through all of the noise.
Since keyword analysis is needed for both SEO
(search engine optimization) and SEM, we often confuse using these terms.
The thing that needs to be emphasized is to create text of your website in such a way that the algorithms
find them easily. It focuses on networking and impeccable website maintenance.
Also make sure that the articles are of high quality as it is the key to get better rankings on search engines and more profits.
Search engine optimization is necessary for online businesses because
it lets your website get found. Still hanging on. Now, if it takes you three years to referrer 3000 members

fact, soon, not using RDFa could put a site at a disadvantage.
However with passing time the complexity in this
